Wonder® Balloon Takes Flight at 45th Annual
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta®
THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Wonder®, one of America’s most iconic brands, will fly high above Albuquerque, N.M., Oct. 1- as the colorful hot air Wonder Balloon takes flight at the 45th Annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.Festival attendees and Albuquerque residents are encouraged to upload their photos of the Wonder Balloon during the 9-day festival using #SpotTheWonder on Twitter and Instagram for a chance to win a high-end camera and $1,921, a nod to the year the Wonder Bread brand was born.
The awe-inspiring Wonder Balloon, which has been flying for 15 years, is more 90 feet high and 75 feet wide, and when fully inflated, is large enough to hold more than 90,000 basketballs. It will be one of approximately 500 hot air balloons at theAlbuquerque Balloon Fiesta, the largest gathering of its kind in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators.
Wonder is partnering with Special Spaces of Albuquerque, an organization that creates dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening illnesses, to give one special child the chance to take part in this magnificent gathering through a VIP experience. Wonder Bread will also be making an impactful donation to Special Spaces to support the construction of its next bedroom, so one more deserving child from Albuquerque has a place of peace and comfort.
Balloon pilots from all over the world, including the Wonder Balloon’s own veteran pilot Chris Sabia will fly in the event, taking advantage of the famous “Albuquerque Box” – a weather phenomenon where the lowest winds are moving in one direction and the higher level winds are moving in another – created by the Rio Grande Valley and enhanced by the Sandia Mountains. The “box” enables balloonists to backtrack their flight path at times and land close to their launch site.
“I took my first ride in a hot air balloon when I was 12 years old; it was a birthday gift from my father. My love for ballooning and my aviation career took off from that point on,” Sabia explains. “I pilot the Wonder Balloon in festivals all across the country and seeing the look of awe and wonder on the faces of spectators as they watch these giants ascend up into the sky reminds me every day what a dream job I have.”
The Wonder brand was born in 1921 after Elmer Cline, an executive with Taggart Baking Company was "filled with wonder" by the sight of hundreds of balloons creating a kaleidoscope of color at the International Balloon Race at the Indianapolis Speedway. Inspiration struck, a brand was born and, for the last 90 years, the wonders haven't ceased.
